7 Things to Look for When Buying a Washer that Will Make Your Life Easier

Do you know how many loads of laundry I need to do per week just to keep my head above water? Missing a day or two can have catastrophic, weekend-killing effects in our household and the standard model washer we bought as newlyweds is just about on its last spin cycle.
Here’s where the stress comes in.
Big appliance purchases always stress me out. They are expensive and crucial to our everyday lives. We depend on them to get us through the week from refrigerating foods to keeping dishes clean and washing school uniforms, and living without them -even for a week- can make life disastrous.
I don’t want to waste our money on something that won’t work how and when I need it to. For the price I’m paying, I want all the bells and whistles that make everyday life easier and I need it to last longer than the Pokémon phase.
So making the right choice is important.
Buying a Washer for a Family of 5
When we made our first washer purchase, my husband and I were newlyweds. It was just the two of us and we made the decision based on what was on sale THAT DAY. In hindsight, I should have done more research and considered what we would need in the future (with more family members). But we were in a rush. We had laundry to do and nowhere to do it.
Fast forward to now (10 years later)- we have 3 more family members and although it’s still running, our washer isn’t as efficient as we’d like it to be. It doesn’t have all of the conveniences that the new washers come with (I wish I could wash things “really quick”!) and it’s definitely not big enough for our family-sized loads.
Next time I make a big purchase, I’d like to do it “right”. While I’m half hoping that our current laundry set-up will last us for a while, I’m also fearful that it will break down (likely at the most inopportune moment as usual) and I’ll be forced to make a hasty decision… because I need it “RIGHT NOW”.
So when the opportunity to review the LG’s TwinWash system and see how it could benefit my family, I was more than happy to do it. I saw this as an opportunity to start my research so that when my washer finally kicks the bucket, I’ll know what I’m looking for.
There are so many options and price ranges out there, but if you’re buying a washer with a family in mind, there are certain must-haves and things to consider.
What to Look for in a Washer
As a family of 5, there are a few standard items that we need from a new washer. These are:
We have a ton of laundry- towels, bed linens, blankets, and clothes. I need a machine that will be able to wash these kinds items in the least amount of loads possible. This is especially important when we get back from a beach trip or vacation because who wants to return from vacation with double the work to do? (Find out what you need and don’t need to pack on your next beach trip & grab the free printable here.)
I have 3 children that have a few different extracurriculars per week and need a machine that can handle small loads.
I have uniforms and nap blankets to wash, so the quick load option would be nice for Sunday night or last-minute scrambling.
Finally, our next washer needs to be my ally. It needs to be there with me, unfaltering, through the thick and thins of parenthood, and if family-life ever beats it down, I need a guarantee that the manufacturer stands behind their product.
These wants and needs don’t seem unreasonable, do they? The point is that we just want to invest in a quality product that will make life easier and work as we need it to. LG believes they have a product that can do all of this, so let’s check it out:
LG TwinWash and SideKick System at Best Buy
After checking out the LG TwinWash System, I have to say that there are a lot of features/capabilities that would fit the needs of our family.
The ease of access of a front load washer is indisputable, I’d love to not have to dive in my washer for the clothes at the bottom and the best part- the kids are able to help with the laundry!! Now they can reach all of the clothes without falling in, and transfer them to the dryer- making laundry less of a chore for me.
The TwinWash System is Energy Star certified and not only washes two loads at the same time but can cut washing time on larger loads by 30 minutes. “TurboWash 2.0 feature saves up to 30 minutes on larger loads with outstanding cleaning performance”.
Ability to Wash Large Loads
The TwinWash System and LG Sidekick combined have a capacity of up to 6.6 cubic ft- which is definitely big enough for our large loads. Not sure what size washer you’re looking for? Check out Best Buy’s Laundry Buying Guide.
Ability to Wash Small Loads
The LG Sidekick would definitely come in handy for delicates, quick loads like workout gear and/or uniforms, and the best part is that you can wash in both the TwinWash washer and sidekick simultaneously. That is a huge time-saver right there!
Quick Wash Function
There are 12 wash cycles in the LG TwinWash system, to include: Cotton/Normal, Perm. Press, Delicates, Speed Wash, TubClean™, Bulky/Large Sanitary, Allergiene™, Heavy Duty, BrightWhites™, Towels, Download. That Speed Wash function alone has me squealing. LOL
The LG comes with a 10-year warranty on the Inverter Direct Drive Motor. For more information and specifications, click here.
If you’re like me and are seriously considering replacing your current, less-efficient system for this one, then you’ll be happy to know that Best Buy has a Price-Match Guarantee, and if you purchase a LG laundry solution between 1/11/18 and 4/25/18, you can receive up to $500 off at Best Buy. This little guy can do big things. It can run simultaneously when you’re washing a big load- so that small load of delicates you have? Well, you can wash it at the same time as your heavy duty loads and save yourself the time. This would be a big help for our family and would restore order to sock drawers. I also love how I can wash small, last minute things like a team uniform, someone’s favorite blanket, or my favorite (most comfortable) pair of jeans really quick.
The Verdict on the LG TwinWash and Sidekick System
Needless to say, I was pretty impressed with the LG TwinWash System and Sidekick. It has all the features we are missing with the outdated and small standard system that we currently use. I am seriously considering this upgrade for our family and look forward to using all of these easy features (and having the kids help, too!).Here's a great way to save time, money, & get the #kids to help you with the #laundry!
