Best Wine Glasses for Moms

With the launch of Wine and Lavender’s new weekly segment, Wine of the Week, last week, I thought a post on wine glasses seemed, well… appropriate. I can’t tell you how many wine glasses we’ve gone through in this house. Size, shape, type, and material- we’ve seen almost everything and have a few favorites. I decided to put a quick list together for you moms who may be in the market for some new wine glasses. So let’s get started- here are the best wine glasses for Moms!

Still Drinking Out of a Hefty Cup from the Last Party?

Wine glasses are as elegant as they are fragile. Chances are, you’ve had some in the house at some point, but they’ve succumbed to the kids, a dishwasher incident, or perhaps an incident you can’t even remember because the wine was FLOWING that night…

The good news is that there are so many durable (and yet, still classy) wine glasses available nowadays! Manufacturers are on to us, ladies- they know the struggle with kids is real. They know we need our wine. They know that we need classy (and durable) wine glasses from which to sip our beloved adult grape juice. But how do you start searching for the right glass?

First off, wine glass design has gone beyond the traditional stemware that you’re used to seeing. There are so many cute/unique glasses out there just waiting to be sipped on! They come in different shapes, sizes, materials, colors, and designs. Let’s hit on a few basic points before we delve into wine glass world, shall we?

Shapes: Wine glasses come in a variety of shapes, each one catering to specific types of wine to allow them the breathe properly (and you thought I didn’t know anything about wine!). In short, different wines belong in different glasses.

Sizes: You can purchase wine glasses generally anywhere between 8oz and 22oz. My advice to you: You don’t want to be the Neighborhood Lush. Stick to smaller glass sizes because you’ll drink less (Take it easy, Lady- wine is for sipping!) and the more you pour, the more you’ll lose if your cup were to tip over.

Materials: Wine glasses can be found in two traditional forms: glass and crystal. As a Mom, you might not want the fancy crystal since they tend to be pricey and our kids don’t allow us to have nice things. We had a set of crystal wine glasses once… We are now down to one, and it’s formed some sort of build-up on it. After doing some research, it appears as though we’ve been washing it wrong. So that’s something else to take into consideration- if you want an easy wine glass that you can throw in the dishwasher, I’d suggest going with glass. We are also starting to see wine glasses come in other materials like stainless steel, soft, and hard plastics- these are definitely more durable than your traditional glass stemware, but it depends on the person sipping on the wine whether or not they prefer these other materials.

Designs: There are so many different and fun designs! More recently, stem-less wine glasses have become popular (I wonder if it’s because Moms found them to be safer from spilling?). Stems or no stems, there are some really eccentric glasses out there. Some are etched- which is great, especially when you’re having people over- you won’t have to wonder who’s wine glass is whose. (But if your wine glasses aren’t etched, I have a hilarious and cute solution for that HERE.) Also, you’ll come across some beautiful, hand-painted wine glasses that are stunning… but I’d stay away from them. They’re not always dishwasher safe and the paint will rub right off with a nudge of the sponge. Also, with all of the awesome crafting Moms are doing with their Cricuts these days, you can always opt for a custom decal for your glasses.

Wine glass basics done… now what?

Now I could go into the nitty-gritty on the specifics of each kind of glass, the materials, and shapes, but you already know that I am no connoisseur. Instead, I took the liberty of doing a Google search for you, that turned up all kinds of information and infographics, so why reinvent the wheel? I found one extremely helpful article/tutorial complete with an infographic right on Wine Folly. If you’re serious about getting to know your glasses, you need to read that article.

If you don’t care about all the details and just want a durable and cute-looking wine glass to be able to enjoy your vino, I’ve made you a list below.
