Personalized Pizza Stone Activity for Kids

Personalized Pizza Stone Activity for Kids

Every Friday we have pizza. Ok, so it’s not usually Paleo-friendly and adds to my need to work out, but hey- the kids LOVE it. We also try to do a family activity on Fridays, which, as of lately, has mostly been family movies… A LOT of family movies. It was definitely time for a change- something that included us working together, but without play money and small pieces that my youngest would just throw around…

We received a box of gifts last Christmas from my MIL that included a Pampered Chef Kids’ Pizza Set, that comes with one personal size round stone, a kid’s pizza cutter, kid-sized rolling pin, and cutting mat. Along with the set, she sent us four extra pizza stones and a set of Sharpie markers. The idea was for us all to decorate/personalize our own pizza stones. It was such a thoughtful gift, especially considering we eat pizza once a week, and we were happy to finally get to it.

We had a great time putting our personal touches on the stones and I had to let you guys know about it… (along with some of the dos & don’ts I learned in the process.) So if you’re looking for a fun, family activity that can serve as a great memory, and is functional, here it is…

Before Getting Started

You can save yourself the time by washing and drying first. Before you get started, make sure that you wash your stones and give them ample time to dry before the activity. We ended up decorating them first, then realizing that we should clean them before cooking with them, so we had to rinse them, and put them in the oven to dry before we could continue.

That said, we heated them up to dry and then had to wait for them to cool off. The whole point of the stones is that they keep heat well, so it took them a while to cool off. We played with the idea of putting them in the refrigerator to cool quicker but realized that may cause them to crack, so we just had to wait. You can imagine that excited children weren’t thrilled that they had to wait, but it was what it was.

Make sure the table or surface you are working on is covered. Whether it’s protected in plastic, an old sheet, or tablecloth, make sure your surface is protected. We all know what Sharpies are capable of.

Make sure the kids are dressed appropriately. We’re working with Sharpies, so make sure the kids aren’t wearing their Sunday best!

For this activity, you’ll need

  • Cooking Stone- You can get one large stone for the whole family to decorate or personal-sized stones for each family member. Pampered Chef sells Personal Size Round Stones, Medium Round Stones or Large Round Stones.
  • Pizza Toppings- Your Choice!!
  • Pampered Chef Kids’ Pizza Set which includes a personal size stone, cutting mat with personal size measurement, kid’s pizza cutter, and kid’s rolling pin. (You don’t necessarily need to buy Pampered Chef and can find most of these items already in your kitchen, but they do make a great gift and are quality!)

The Fun Part… Decorating!!

To get started on decorating, we opened up our Sharpies and laid them out on the table. We had a good variety of colors, which made for some pretty great designing! Please DO NOT color where you will be putting the dough! You don’t want Sharpie on your pizza, so only decorate the BACK of the stone.

We laid out the stones, upside down, on the table and let the kids get to it. It was interesting to see what everyone came up with. When you’re done, don’t forget to write each person’s name or some identifying message on the side of the stone so you can distinguish between each person’s when it’s in the oven, or filled with a pizza.

Making Personalized Pizzas

Next, we moved on to making the dough. The kit included a cutting mat that had the dough recipe on it and a perfect-sized circle to measure the dough for the stones. The mat is transparent, so if you are working on a surface that has a lot of patterns and/or colors, it helps to put a paper towel or piece of paper under it, so you can read it better.

We already had the children’s mixing bowl set- which was useful for this activity because it has a handle on the bowl- making it easier for little ones to mix. The child-size rolling pin that came with the kit was not only cute but extremely functional for little hands!

We followed the simple directions and made our dough. Although the set says it’s for ages 8+, my two younger ones did not have any issues participating at all. In fact, my youngest loved the kid’s spatula with the smile on it and was eager to keep mixing.

We made the dough, measured it, and placed it on the stones. We cooked it for 10 minutes on one side, and then took it out to cool. At this point, the stones were quite warm. If you have the time, it would be great to let them completely cool off before moving on to putting the toppings, OR if you already started late like we did, you can take the dough off the stones and place them on something else to decorate.

We placed them onto cutting boards and/or cookie sheets so that the kids could safely put their preferred toppings on without the danger of getting burned by the stones. A cooling rack is also another great, flat surface to put toppings on warm dough.

When my little chefs were done topping their pizzas, we put them back on their individual stones and into the oven for 4-5 minutes more. Dinner was done, the kids got creative and cooked, and we all did it as a family. Bam.Have fun making pizza with the kids with this personalized pizza making activity. A Great Family Activity

Overall, it was a great gift!! It was fun, memorable and will continue to be useful in more ways than one. The stones can be used for anything else you’d cook on a stone- like roasted broccoli, potatoes, carrots, kale chips, etc… The options are endless and the personal size is great to do a few small dishes together, or for when you only need a personal-sized portion.

Since we’re on the topic of Pampered Chef- I thought I’d let you know that once all the pizzas were done, it was nice to have their rechargeable, electric wine bottle opener to open a nice bottle of weekend wine…

After a fun pizza-making activity with the kids, Pampered Chef's wine bottle opener helped to open the wine for adults! Learn more about the personalized pizza stone activity for kids. Click here.

    • Hey Yentl! Thanks for stopping by! I can’t take credit for the idea myself (my MIL sent it all to us), but you’re right- it’s a great idea, it was fun, and they’re certainly something we can enjoy for years to come!!

  • We usually do a family night on Fridays. Pizza is high on the list for meals that night as well. I love pizza. So my kids get get a bonus. We often watch a new movie but sometimes play a game. We have one we love in the iPad that even the little kids can play. I’ll look in to these pizza stones. They look fun. Thanks for the tip.

    • You’re welcome, Caroline! They were fun and easy to do, too! (Even my youngest was able to participate). Thanks for stopping by!

  • This looks like a great family activity! Maybe we should make some too because we also eat pizza about once a week. :/ Stopping by from the Family Joy link up.

    • Hey Alicia! Thanks for stopping by! They were really fun to decorate and the kids loved making their own pizza afterwards, too. 🙂

  • What a great idea! my kids would have so much fun coloring these stones! A great idea would be to make a family crest or shield on the back of a large stone!

    • Thanks for stopping by Lisa! Making a family crest with a large stone is SUCH a great idea!! That would definitely be a great family memory to hold onto.
