Remembering Those Who Made the Ultimate Sacrifice on Memorial Day

To Those Who Made the Ultimate Sacrifice: We Will Never Forget

When we lived on base, every morning at 8am our nation’s anthem played over the loudspeaker across base. This was known as “morning colors”.  When we first moved there, my husband was quick to inform me on what to do when I heard “morning colors”.

If you were in a car, you were required to stop until it was done.

If you were walking, you were required to stop, turn in the direction of the flag or music and stand quietly and respectfully until it was done.

Every morning, for a few minutes of your day, you were required to stop and reflect on our country, our freedom, and what it meant to be apart of it.

This was something that took some getting used to for me at first, but after a while, it became something I came to enjoy and grew a sense of pride about. Here we all were- an entire base of thousands stopping to reflect on our country.

During my husband’s deployments, these moments became even more dear to me because they helped me to remember our reason for being there. About a third of the way into each deployment, I always got somewhat emotional.

There were many times where the selfish side of me was ready to give up, get him home, and get us out… But hearing our anthem every morning restored my pride and the strength to carry on. It made me realize that I wasn’t the only one depending on my husband, but a whole country full of men, women, and children were depending on him to keep us all safe.

Many before him were tasked with this duty and gave the ultimate sacrifice to protect us all. Today is the day we remember them, and today is the day we should stop and reflect on that.

Our freedom wasn’t free.

Many Fathers, Mothers, Sisters, Brothers, Cousins, Aunts, and Uncles have fought for our lives and liberty. Our different political views and opinions doesn’t change this. The many brave who have fought so diligently to protect us need to be respectfully remembered and and their sacrifice never forgotten.

On this day, I encourage you to stop and reflect on our country, our freedom, and what it means to be apart of it. Reflect on those who gave their lives to give you freedom, and don’t forget their families. Today is not all about sales and barbecues, but about the many who fought hard to protect our country and people.

Please remember this, and remember them.
